Today’s modern channel at Muskegon serves mostly pleasure craft with the occasional freighter and cruise ship.
A hundred and forty years ago, at the height of the lumber era, schooners and streamers would be in a line waiting to enter this channel.
This view shows some early ice on the south breakwater, and on the far left a rare glimpse of a weather buoy awaiting winter storage.
