Unity Music Festival 2015

This has been something I’ve wanted to do for some time now. Photograph the Unity Christian Music Festival.

In the 80s, I’ve photographed the Cornerstone Festivals. 1980s. Film. Lost forever, the victim of basement mold.

Since then,  it seems I’ve shot a variety of anything.

Photographing Unity 2015 presented a unique window of expression for me. Events are about connecting with people in a way that a street photographer such as Henri Cartier Bresson or Saul Leiter would, while documenting stories such as Mary Ellen Mark. All heroes!

And then there’s the concert photography. I must admit, I felt like such a noob! It’s been well over two decades since I seriously shot a concert. I’m thankful for inspiration from such veterans as Mick Rock and contemporaries like Brad Moore. Check out Brad’s shots of Third Day at Red Rocks!

The star attraction of Unity is naturally the stage and music. There is also some serious acreage dedicated to a sort of midway. Not your typical carnival rides though. Instead, great activities for the entire family to enjoy, from inflatables, and rock climbing, and archery, to an old fashion arcade and face painting. And of course no festival would be complete without a variety of deep fried delicacies!

My hope is that you sense the same connection and energy as I did shooting this incredible event that averaged well over 15,000 attendees each of the four days! I’m especially grateful for all the awesome people here for allowing me into their world for a brief moment!
