2015 Year in Review

It’s an old Picture Michigan tradition that was lost when the website blog went kaput a few years ago. The Year In Review returns with an upgrade.

In the past it was a combination of highlighting my photography and showing off my home state of Michigan. This time around, I would simply like to show off the town of Muskegon. This video highlights a few of the events, some of the places, and most of all, the awesome people that call Muskegon HOME!!

It’s quite a ride and I hope you enjoy. And if you enjoy it, please share it with the world! Thank you for dropping by.

Muskegon Video Clips

In the past month, while photographing around Muskegon, I captured some video clips and time-lapse video. Each of the four were posted on Facebook over the course of a month.

Here is a bundle of those four videos. Note that because it’s a bundle, we role credits twice.

And it wouldn’t be right if I didn’t throw in a few still photos too! There was a lot of awesome picture-taking during this stretch of time. I’ll call these three “a few of my favorites.”

November 2015 Calendar Desktop Wallpaper – Bond Falls

This photo if from one of my most favorite photography days ever. Easily top 50! This was day three of a three-day trip to photograph autumn colors in the Upper Peninsula. The colors were extremely limited. However, Bond Falls had some serious awesomeness going on! A fresh blanket of increasing snow.

It was arresting and stunning, and it was not easy to leave.

October 2015 Calendar Desktop Wallpaper – Empire Bluffs

Seen in the background is the Empire Bluffs. There are some hiking trails back there and the views are breathtaking. From those vantage points, looking north, you can see the dunes and bluffs of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. That’s where this picture was taken, looking south.

When you set your desktop wallpaper, I recommend using the CENTER choice instead of STRETCH. Stretching the wallpaper fills the screen but might stretch it too far one way or the other, making it fat looking or tall looking. The wallpaper is scaled at 16:9. If your monitor is that scale, it would be safe to stretch.

Enjoy and share!! Thank you!

September 2015 Calendar Desktop Wallpaper – Manabezho Falls

If you love exploring waterfalls you will love this part of the Upper Peninsula. A couple of rivers a few miles apart; the Black River and this one, the Presque Isle River. You can park your car near each waterfall for a short hike or make it a couple of longer hikes through rugged trails. The thing about these hikes, is that there’s a reward at the end of each trail. It’s cool to enjoy a hike in the wilderness. It’s way cooler when there’s a prize involved — and it’s a prize that teases you as you approach a thunderous roar.

Unity Music Festival 2015

This has been something I’ve wanted to do for some time now. Photograph the Unity Christian Music Festival.

In the 80s, I’ve photographed the Cornerstone Festivals. 1980s. Film. Lost forever, the victim of basement mold.

Since then,  it seems I’ve shot a variety of anything.

Photographing Unity 2015 presented a unique window of expression for me. Events are about connecting with people in a way that a street photographer such as Henri Cartier Bresson or Saul Leiter would, while documenting stories such as Mary Ellen Mark. All heroes!

And then there’s the concert photography. I must admit, I felt like such a noob! It’s been well over two decades since I seriously shot a concert. I’m thankful for inspiration from such veterans as Mick Rock and contemporaries like Brad Moore. Check out Brad’s shots of Third Day at Red Rocks!

The star attraction of Unity is naturally the stage and music. There is also some serious acreage dedicated to a sort of midway. Not your typical carnival rides though. Instead, great activities for the entire family to enjoy, from inflatables, and rock climbing, and archery, to an old fashion arcade and face painting. And of course no festival would be complete without a variety of deep fried delicacies!

My hope is that you sense the same connection and energy as I did shooting this incredible event that averaged well over 15,000 attendees each of the four days! I’m especially grateful for all the awesome people here for allowing me into their world for a brief moment!
